The institution is a government college and an Institute of National Importance. IIT Indore was established in 2009-10 in a temporary campus at the Institute of Engineering and Technology of Devi Ahilya University under the mentorship of IIT Bombay. Shri Arjun Singh, the Union HRD minister, then laid the foundation of the permanent campus on February 17, 2009, at Simrol. From February 2016, IIT Indore has been functioning from its permanent campus.

IIT Indore Admission Process

- Admissions at IIT Indore are based on their performance in the entrance exam and counselling.
- Entrance Exams Accepted: JEE Advanced scores for BTech, GATE scores for MTech admissions and JAM scores for MSc admissions.
- 350 seats are allotted for BTech courses, while MTech seat intake is 60 as per Indian Institute of Technology Indore Seat Intake.
- GATE 2026 exam for MTech admissions will be held on February 7, 8, 14, and 15, 2026.
- JAM 2026 exam for MSc admissions will be held on February 15, 2026.
- JEE Main 2026 exam will be conducted from January 21-30, 2025 and the last date to apply is November 27, 2025.
