The institution is a government college and an Institute of National Importance. IIT Indore was established in 2009-10 in a temporary campus at the Institute of Engineering and Technology of Devi Ahilya University under the mentorship of IIT Bombay. Shri Arjun Singh, the Union HRD minister, then laid the foundation of the permanent campus on February 17, 2009, at Simrol. From February 2016, IIT Indore has been functioning from its permanent campus.

- Admissions at IIT Indore are based on their performance in the entrance exam and counselling.
